This series of images were created over a 12 month period. I have always loved ballet and other classical dance and decided to search out dancers as models for a set of pictures. Dancers are generally really creative people with a passion for art so they make ideal models. After putting out a handful of castings over a couple of months I managed to get some dance models for the project. Shooting dancers was a great way to practice my studio lighting skills as well as learn to capture movement well.
After studying good and bad examples and chatting to a couple of other photographers and getting opinions as regards lighting I was ready to start creating work lit and captured in the way that pleased me. I shot for many hours practicing and gradually improving. All of the studio images were created at my home studio AKA lounge which was a big challenge as you can imagine.
One of my images from the series “Jump” came first in digital camera magazines photographer of the year competition. Since then the images have been in exhibitions, published in photo books, magazines and used for advertising. Hopefully I will get a chance to revisit these and shoot a new series. The majority of these images were shot in Bournemouth or along the south coast.
